Matthew Countryman Speaks at Germantown Friends School

Longtime F&W alum, Matthew Countryman, gave the Mercer Tate Lecture at Germantown Friends School this October. Matthew graduated from GFS in 1981 and is now the Associate Professor of Afro-American and African Studies and History at the University of Michigan, where he has taught for 29 years. He is also the author of Up South: Civil Rights and Black Power in Philadelphia, which won the 2006 Liberty Legacy Foundation Award. Matthew spoke on the ongoing struggle of racial justice, how it has affected his family and his community, and the hope he sees for a more just future. Matthew was a camper and counselor at Timberlake and Tamarack Farm, as well as an F&W trustee. His mother, Joan Countryman, was also an F&W camper, staff member, and trustee.

You can watch Matthew’s lecture here.

Multi-generational F&W Connections

Pictured here are Ridge Satterthwaite, former F&W Executive Director, and Adair Arbor, current director at Saltash Mountain, after a post-summer debrief this fall at Ridge’s home in Thetford, VT. Ridge trained Adair as a trip leader when she was a teenage camp counselor, and has since been a mentor, neighbor, and friend. Ridge was an instrumental leader at Farm & Wilderness before passing the torch to his successor, Len Cadwallader, and now lives on Lake Fairlee with his wife, Sally.
