We’ve been at SAM Camp less than a week and already it feels like we’ve been here forever. We spent the first full day in camp preparing for our first trip! We set up tents, tested camp stoves, practiced swamping a canoe and paddling back to shore, planned our trip menus, and packed large amounts of food. Friday morning, we were off! These first trips are more about bonding as a cabin group and learning skills, more than an epic adventure. However, we did travel to such exotic locations as: The Long Trail, Tiny Mountain, Tiny Pond, and Spruce Point. Despite some bugs and a mysteriously disappearing bag of powdered cheese, a good time was had by all.
Sunday we all returned from our cabin trips and enjoyed showering, reading mail, and settling back into camp life. That night, each cabin group performed a skit that showed the highlights of our trips. After the brilliant dramatic performances, we sang some songs and shared what we had learned during our time in the woods.
Now that we’re back in camp, we are preparing for Interdependence Day, an all Farm & Wilderness event where we perform a newly created skit to be performed in front of the whole community. Everyone in camp has at least one line, and everyone helps with prop making, songwriting, sign painting, or dance choreography.
After that, we’ll have a day or so to rest on our critical acclaim, and then we’ll be packing up again for our Long Trips.
