Growing, Exploring, Adventuring, and Connecting - Farm & Wilderness

Swallows dipped and dove against a backdrop of emerald trees, almost touching the still surface of Woodrow Reservoir as camp began to stir early this morning. We came out of a rainy first few days with spirits, not at all dampened!

Campers have already begun immersing themselves in life here; getting acquainted with our new pig Phyllis, several bunnies, and the chickens during barn chores, beginning swim lessons, dreaming up wild art projects in Creative Arts, and learning to wield carpentry tools in Work Projects and at the Forge. It has been wonderful to come together on the porch for singing time after breakfast, sharing old favorites and new tunes with old, and new, friends. One new song we are all very excited about as a camp is “Quiet” by MILCK which we are going to perform for all the camps on Interdependance Day; a “holiday” where we all come together to celebrate our larger connected Farm and Wilderness community.

IB is particularly excited to be sharing this song, which was performed at the Women’s March this year, and campers are already questioning, in keeping with one of the lyrics of the song, what are things that we “can’t keep quiet [about] anymore”? We are beginning exciting Inclusivity and Equity conversations about gender, intersectionality and how we understand our identities at camp and in the larger world. We are challenging ourselves to ask big questions about ourselves and our world and notice the ways that systems of oppression work both at camp and outside of our community here.
