Timber Framing and Arts - Farm & Wilderness

Written by Amy Bowen | July 30, 2014

At Tamarack Farm, Week Five culminated in a jam-packed Saturday, where our whole community works together on a project instead of dividing our energies on several projects as we do during the week.

This Saturday we raised the timber frame of a cabin!

During the week, our campers and staff have been focused crafting the joinery for the frame. As our Saturday project commenced, we carried these beautiful timbers (harvested on our land) down to the cabin site. We assembled the giant pieces and joined them together with wooden pegs. Next, we raised the frame with many hands and ropes. By the end of the day, we had the framing together — including rafters. It’s a beautiful frame that we’ll spend the rest of the summer siding and roofing (as well as adding creative finishing touches).

We also celebrated our MOFA event (Museum of Farm Art) that Saturday evening, capping our week-long efforts. We enjoyed fancy hors d’oeuvres and a wide range of artistic expression. We admired our community’s creativity – ranging  from beautiful benches and Adirondack chairs; to fine paintings and collages; to photography and even an interactive musical instrument. It’s amazing to witness so much creativity and skill in expression within one small community. After we walked around enjoying the visual art, we sat down as the sun was setting to feast on performance arts.
