Hello from Flying Cloud!
Second session has gotten off to a great start. After second session campers arrived, we opened the FC August 2013 community with a friendship fire. Back in July, our first friendship fire back had been started by our camper firekeeper with a bow-drill. This fire has been feeding us and keeping us warm all summer. This time around, any Flying Clouder who wanted to do, could try their hand at friction fire, and added their coals to the bed of embers we already had. We collected enough smaller coals and dust from the campers and staff to create one of the largest coals that any of us had ever seen!
Then, we took turns going around and sharing what it was we hoped to leave behind in coming to camp, what it was we hoped to gain during our time at FC, and what we wanted to bring to this session’s community.
Next, we had a few days of activities including flute making, spoon carving, stream walks, tree i.d. walks, and day trips. Some, like Sky Runners, involved campers who woke up at the crack of dawn to hike Shrewsbury, Killington, and Pico, three of the tallest peaks in the area.
We also had our first Naming Ceremony of Second Session. After a day of reflection up on the flanks of Saltash Mountain, ten Flying Clouders received their FC names at this ceremony. The names given at this ceremony were:
Glacier Feeds the Brook
Ash Touches Sky
Spruce Root Sings
Shadow Song
Arctic Dawn
Iris Touches the Earth
Moonlit Waves
Gathering Stone
Horizon Heart
And
Lights the Circle
Coming up are more activities and long trips, but more on that to follow!
