Farm Updates - Farm & Wilderness

Written by Kory Mathis | June 18, 2012

The weather has turned glorious just a week before campers arrive at Farm & Wilderness.

We’ve just completed our first hay cutting of the season at the Plymouth Notch. The rhythmic whir of the blades kept me company as we baled the green-gold grass, cured by the recent days of sun. These bales, as well as later cuttings this summer, will feed our flocks and herds in the wintertime.

The Farm Crew endured a wet spring to prune, plant and prepare for Opening Day! They are eager to share their knowledge and introduce campers to the animals who will live at the various camps.

Let me introduce our newest Farm Crew members. We have Stephanie at Barn Day Camp, Elana at Timberlake; Michael at Tamarack Farm and Micah at Indian Brook.

They will care for our pigs, goats, chickens, ducks and other animals at each of the camps, as well as offer guidance on animal husbandry and gardening during the summer months.

The brief sugaring season left us with more time for lambing, kidding and calving. We have many new animals at the Farm and will keep some, including this calf, Runsa, a beautiful ½ Guernsey and ½ Jersey who was born earlier this month.
