Food Service Director
Lead a mix of five learning kitchens in beautiful Vermont!
Dates are May to October*
Salary start at $24,000
An epic day at camp doesn’t happen without great meals. We are looking for a Director of Food Services to manage the overall operation of our camp kitchens and catering events in our seasonal retreat kitchen.
This position will develop menus, oversee ordering and preparation of a nutritious and diverse menu that meets the dietary needs of campers and team members, monitor food safety and sanitation standards, and train and co-manage a team of kitchen staff. The Food Services Director is instrumental in creating an inclusive camp community by working with our food systems as a whole – from soil to plate, from gardener to cook and camp director to consumer.
Farm & Wilderness and our Five Kitchens
- Each kitchen emphasizes low-processed, fresh, and locally grown foods where possible;
- Campers are often in the kitchen helping prepare meals, set tables, and clean dishes;
- Kitchen staff are considered a part of each camp’s community and are a part of camp events; and
- Kitchens are learning environments where values of collaboration, community, and intention are centered.
- Each kitchen serves a different sized community made up of different genders (male & non-binary, all genders, female & non-binary communities);
- Each kitchen has its own traditions around food, such as how often desserts are served, types of snacks given, or “comfort” vs “stretch” foods/meals;
- Each kitchen has its own unique food-related events, such as end-of-summer banquets and meals made of food completely from our gardens; and
- Each kitchen and camp has its own culture that feels both “Farm and Wilderness” and distinctly their own.
About our Kitchens & the Role
Campers Are in the Kitchen
Campers wash all the dishes, set the tables, and sometimes help chop vegetables. They do it eagerly and imperfectly – they are kids after all! At other camps the kitchen may be closed off. At Farm & Wilderness, campers and non-cooking staff also are in the space. The DFS supports cooks working with campers and creating a kitchen culture that welcomes their help.
Ordering Food & Designing Menus
The DFS will work with Camp Director and Head Cooks to develop camp-specific menus that are thoughtful of the unique needs of each camp. These menus should be a mix of comfort and stretch foods that limit food waste. The DFS will help support camps cooking the menu. The role requires organization and planning skills with a dash of creativity when things don’t work as planned.
Meals Are on Time & Healthy
We provide healthy, high quality food for our campers. We pride ourselves on how much of our food is cooked from scratch. We regularly accommodate a variety of dietary needs such as omnivores, vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free diets. The DFS helps our kitchens get meals out on time - a late meal can ripple across a day’s schedule.

Experience Camp Magic
We’ll keep saying it: get out of the kitchen sometimes. Swim in the lake, take in a gorgeous sunset, and attend a camper talent show. Don’t miss out on the opportunities for camp magic all around you – you’ll be happier in the long run!
